Ideas for Community Service

Ideas for Community Service : Community Need

When considering ideas for community service common ideas may come to mind like cleaning up the neighborhood. The unfortunate reality is that there are many more people who liter than those who may volunteer to pick up trash! Community service is so closely tied to volunteerism that many times the two words are interchangeable. It goes without saying that if the world had more volunteers it would be a better place. Ideas for community service exceed the local trash pick up. We’ll consider a couple others that help to revive our community.
Ideas for community service : Anti Bullying
Bullying has always been present in schools as well as work place environments. Due to recent tragic situations, bullying has gained global exposure. community service ideas don’t have to be traditional! There are many people who have chosen to volunteer their time by creating peer groups who promote anti bullying and awareness regarding the bullying problem. The national center for bullying prevention provides a “petition against bullying”. Simply add your name, age and state to the petition and show your support. Demi Lovato has made it a point to use her “star status” as a platform to be a champion against bullying. Demi speaks about how to get involved.
Ideas for Community Service : Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence continues to be one of those topics that people tend to “sweep under the rug”. The harsh realities that go along with domestic violence are simply too hard to deal with for many. Nonetheless, domestic violence thrives in all societies. Revive our community is cognizant of domestic violence against men as well as women. Promoting awareness about domestic violence is of utmost importance. Debra Bowles operates a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing victims of domestic violence. Debra’s ideas for community service include providing housing for domestic violence victims which include moving an individual’s personal effects from one place to another (At times, Debra must enlist volunteers to help with bags etc). Additionally, Debra provides mentoring for victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence victims tend to lose grasp of “what is unacceptable” as their daily lives are their true reality. Debra speaks out in regard to Domestic violence.
Ideas for Community Service : Share Your Ideas
Joining the fight against bullying and domestic violence are two great ideas for community service and there are many more. Do you have community service ideas. Is there a group that you belong to or a group that you know needs awareness brought to them? Please share your ideas. Visit the revive our community website and share!
Fighting Obesity : Gary Kaposta Lends a Hand
by admin on Dec.25, 2010, under Blog
Fighting obesity is a topic that is everywhere. Revive Our Community has found it necessary to provide our followers with up to date information on how the fight can be won. Below is a video and an article by one our health correspondents Gary Kaposta.
The Obesification of America
A large segment of the American public is suffering from a blue mood or mild depression that causes them to experience overpowering cravings for a type of food and drink that literally forces their bodies to store fat.
This pervasive blue mood stems from depleted levels of a key, chemical messenger in the brain called Serotonin. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, effects mood, sleep patterns, food craving, libido, pain threshold, thyroid function and a number of other important bodily functions. Serotonin is also called” The happy hormone” because it provides us with an overall sense of well-being.
It’s not a coincidence that the number one selling drugs in America are the Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors like Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. They are classified as anti-depressants and according to reliable data from health reporting experts IMS Health, 200 million scripts were issued in the year 2008 by U.S. physicians.
When your serotonin levels are low, the body instinctively knows that consuming overly processed food / drink like candy, chips, bagels, white bread, pizza , sodas, etc.,……will cause the brain to produce a sudden burst of this feel good hormone and that is why it is referred to as mood food or comfort food.
Corrupted junk-food/drink carbohydrates are responsible for the epidemic rise of excess weight gain/obesity that is now going
global. This catastrophic epidemic has made America the world’s fattest nation and it represents a serious threat to our future security.
For years, the public has been told by doctors, fitness trainers and nutritionists that eating fat was responsible for our excess weight gain
dilemma. Eating fat does not provoke an insulin response from the body and therefore it is impossible to store fat without the presence of insulin.
When the low-fat movement gained full traction in the U.S., the average American started to consume 500 more calories per day. That’s 183,000 calories per year or 52 pounds of pure fat! Eating fat provides us with the feeling of fullness or satiety and thus fat should be consumed with every meal as it slows the time it takes for our food to be converted into blood sugar or glucose. This prevents the overproduction of the fat storing hormone insulin. Again, the primary function of insulin is to store fat. Americans are eating less fat than ever before and a trip to any mall will reveal that the low fat movement has been a miserable failure!
So, in essence, many Americans have been self medicating this blue mood/mild depression with junk food and drink carbohydrate because it provides them with short term sense of well-being/relief. Unfortunately, the price the public has paid for this “quick fix solution” is fat storage!

Revive Our Community Correspondents Beginning to Emerge
by admin on Dec.20, 2010, under Blog
Revive Our Community Announces Correspondent Series Addressing Top Concerns
Revive Our Community launched late October 2010 in an effort to bring awareness to several issues that are having a negative effect on our communities. These issues include, but are not limited to, domestic violence, at risk youth, discrimination against the LGBT community, the negative implications of obesity, and many more.
In the short time since our launch we have come to realize just how much people CARE about what is going on in the community and how many are dedicated to changing negative implications into positives. This caring spirit is evidenced by the support we receive on YouTube, facebook and via email. Much of the correspondence we get is from people asking how they can help or shows what they are doing to Revive THEIR Community. The support and feedback we received led to our “What Are YOU Doing?” series that in just one week became a huge success with well over 1,000 views.
The immediate benefits from the “What are YOU Doing?” series has been overwhelming as well. Simply having our followers send a video short of what they are accomplishing in their communities is bringing awareness to their individual causes and helping their sites and profiles gain valuable traffic. We are constantly reviewing videos that have been submitted and identifying the videos and comments that we feel represent your sentiments.
All of the things mentioned so far have brought us to realize that having correspondents who regularly share or report on what is going on in their communities will bring even more awareness to the concept of reviving the community. We are therefore moving forward with some of our initial correspondents to keep our followers and supporters informed of developments. Expect regular updates in issues that affect us all.
Here are two of our initial correspondents that will be checking in regularly:
William “Basketball Bill” Chaffin – Living a Successful Life Filled With Integrity
Gary Kaposta – The Obesification of America
Are you doing something positive in your community that we should know about? Do you know of someone who is? Are you interested in sharing on a regular basis? LET US KNOW!
Is there a specific topic or cause that you think we should cover? LET US KNOW!

Bullying Awareness Increasing
Bullying awareness is VERY hot topic and rightfully so. With an increase in the number of crimes and suicides associated with bullying being reported it is becoming evident that the innocent teasing and horseplay has progressed into a very dangerous trend. Bullying has even evolved into a new and improved form with Cyber Bullying becoming a familiar term.

Bullying Help
by admin on Nov.20, 2010, under Blog
Bullying Help
There can never be enough information or resources that provide bullying help. The stresses of most bullied victims are never heard due to the fact that they feel they will be perceived as weak or that they are in the minority. Quite simply, there should be more of a proactive stance taken by those of us who know that bullying exist. Thus providing more of an opportunity for victims to step forward. The following video is provided by Ellen Degeneres in efforts to provide more awareness on the issue as well as provide sources for victims to seek assistance.
Bullying Help: Summary
We applaud the celebrities who are doing their part to provide awareness on such a trying topic. The celebrities can’t do it alone! In order to truly make a difference we must join forces with the celebs and spread awareness to the masses. Do you know someone who may benefit from these resources? Are you aware of groups who are champions against bullying? Be proactive, share this post and lets take the power out of the bully’s hands and revive our community
Bullying Advice
by admin on Nov.18, 2010, under Blog
Bullying Advice: Be Proactive
A search for Bullying advice will yield millions of results. In fact, if one were “searching” for bullying advice, he or she might be overwhelmed with the results that are returned. Unfortunately, most times the victims of bullies never seek advice due to the notion that they may be perceived as weak. Most bullied victim’s stories are never heard. That being the case, we must make more of a proactive effort to spread awareness on the issue. It is probable that the more we provide bullying advice in a proactive manner, the more opportunities victims will have to speak up and step forward. The following video is provided in effort to promote more awareness on the issue.
Bullying Advice: Summary
Articles and videos can only go so far to promote bullying advice. Those who are concerned must make an effort to proactively spread the word. Hopefully, we can help to ease the pain that victims are experiencing. Most victims in need of bullying advice are children. Although there are some children that will seek advice from an adult (who will take appropriate action), the masses will not. If you know anyone who may benefit from this video or if you simply need an icebreaker to start a discussion, please share and revive our community. Sharing won’t hurt but bullies will!
Facts on Bullying
by admin on Nov.15, 2010, under Blog
Facts on Bullying

Bullying is on the rise and the facts on bullying are astonishing! Approximately 1 in 3 children are part of bullying scenarios (either bullying or being bullied). The facts on bullying behavior get buried many times as the victims either have no one to confide in or they feel as if they are alone. Unfortunately, many times victims feel like they will be perceived as weak if they discuss their being bullied. Quite simply, we must have more programs and outlets in place to make the victims feel more comfortable seeking help when bullied. Additionally, a consolidated focus on providing facts on bullying as well as shining a light on the issue is necessary. The following video is provided in effort to raise awareness as a few celebrities speak on bullying.
Facts on Bullying: Summary
The facts on Bullying are available for us all. However, advocates against bullying must do more to expose the actions. It would be a wonderful thing if all children knew where to go in order to seek help. The more programs available, the more that we expose the facts on bullying and the more we shine a light on the different options available for the victims…the more opportunity we provide for victims to be heard. If you are aware of organizations or groups who are champions against bullying and are taking a step to revive our community, please leave a comment or mail us at info@reviveourcommunity.com .
